The ostrich eggs are a lot thicker than other eggs allowing for both carving and sculpting. This gives more detail to the scenes and makes the egg look very similar to carved ivory. Both carbide and diamond bits are used for the majority of the work and the finish sanding and sculpting is done with dental sanding discs. The sanding discs are small ( 3/8 inch ) and flexible, allowing me to final shape the carved areas with more
smoothness. The discs are used in my Dremel since the high speed handpiece spins so fast they would disentegrate. I use a lightbox while carving these eggs since the
light brings out the detail and angling the sculpted areas in the right manner actually makes the detail look deeper than it really is. I then display them on the lightboxes and one is included with the purchase. The boxes take a 7 watt Christmas tree bulb
which allows the color to be changed. My unicorn is shown with both the clear and red light in the box.
